I wonder how many after reading this story think to themselves, “what was God so upset about that he would respond by confusing the language of the peoples of the earth to scatter them abroad?” On the surface it might seem as if God is against all cultural progress - as if he was upset that man dared to cooperate with one another to build a city. The story of the tower of Babel is well known even in our culture, but I’m not sure that it is often understood. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.” (1 Corinthians 3:10–14, ESV) Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw- each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. And the LORD said, ‘Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.’ And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. “Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.
